Background Story
Lara Croft has been working as a bike courier in a busy part of London, while at the same time taking college classes without much success. Now, at age 21, she decides - against his explicit wishes and despite the warnings of her friends - to solve the mystery of her father's death. Before his death Richard Croft had been the head of a global business empire and part-time archaeologist, who vanished on an expedition.
Characterization
Lara is a independent young woman, unable to cope with the (supposed) death of her father seven years ago. She possesses a "sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit", features which help her survive on the remote and inhospitable island.
Comparison to Reboot Game Lara
Lara's character is - like the whole movie - based in part on the Tomb Raider (2013) reboot game. Many details have been changed, though: e.g. the names of her friends and companions on the island, and the fact that she now lives in London together with some flat mates. Also, in the game she had been working in a pub, now she is a bike courier studying in her free time.
More importantly, the motivation for starting the expedition to the sea off Japan has changed. While in the game she was accompanying her friends Samantha Nishimura and Conrad Roth, hoping to make a name of herself as a young archaeologist, before stranding on Yamatai, she is now driven by the loss of her father, trying to uncover the mystery behind his demise, something we saw first in the second reboot game, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
How much these changes influence Lara's character in the movie remains to be seen.
Development History
On 29 April 2016 Swedish actress Alicia Vikander was revealed to be the actress playing Lara Croft.
As of now (January 2017), no character background story has been released to the public. From the list of actors published on IMDb[2] one can infer that again her father, Richard Croft will play some role. This is corroborated by the movie's short description:
The official movie synopsis released on 18 September 2017 confirmed that Lara once again is hunting for the secret of the untimely demise of her father, travelling to a remote island in the vicinity of Japan.
