A large medipack will restore the full life bar, so you should not use it unless you are almost dead. Health packs can save you from death itself. If your health meter is declining at a fast rate down to zero you can use a health pack to cheat death!
The large medipack also exists in The Angel of Darkness, where it is called Large Health Pack.
