The Bats are encountered often during Lara's adventures. They are the first enemies ever encountered in the games; in the original Tomb Raider. Most often they appear as single enemies, only in Tomb Raider III (where they are harmless ans only serve as style element) and Tomb Raider Chronicles they appear as Flock of Bats.
