The Ark has achieved near-mythological status in recent history, having been the object of countless searches and unproven claims of possesion, with many divergent popular stories of its fate.

From Wikipedia Trivia

In the original Tomb Raider the Ark of the Covenant is seen at the front of Lara's Manor, implying that she had discovered it and was now using it as an ornamental trophy.
