The Grapple (also Magnetic Grapple in Tomb Raider Legend, or Grapple Axe in Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider) is part of Lara's gear in many of the Lara Croft and Tomb Raider games.

Occurrence

Tomb Raider Legend

In Tomb Raider Legend Lara has a Magnetic Grapple, which can be used on shiny, metallic objects to help Lara swing across gaps and pull objects closer. It can also be used in combat against human enemies.

A portable grappling device that replaces the standard hook with a superstrong electromagnet that can be turned on and off remotely from the base unit. 25ft of 300lb test microfilament wire connect the two pieces.
In-game information[1]

Using her grapple, Lara can manipulate objects from a distance, climb or drop to different heights, and swing across large gaps. The grapple consists of a magnetic grapple head that can latch onto discrete, visually distinct surfaces, plus a lengthy wire and an automatic recoiler.

Lara can use this device to climb and manoeuver throughout the game. In addition Lara can use the grapple as a weapon by throwing it around an enemy's waist and dragging them into danger, such as a pit, or she can drag them into range for a close range attack. Lara can also use the grapple to latch onto enemies and then pull them off buildings, cliffs and ledges so that they fall to their deaths or are vulnerable to attack.

Tomb Raider Anniversary

In Tomb Raider Anniversary, the Grapple is not magnetic and is actually more like a hook; it can be used to grapple onto ring-shaped objects. Lara is able to perform a Wall Run while hanging with the Grapple.

  • Croft Manor
The Grapple can also be found inside the Croft Manor. It is located within the Labyrinth. To obtain it, Lara first has to pick up the Sundial Gnomon from the Treasure Vault.

Tomb Raider Underworld

The Grapple has new features in Tomb Raider Underworld. It can be fired for wall climbing when standing on firm ground, and it can also be wrapped around objects to solve puzzles.

Firing a high-tension swing line with a tensile strength in excess of 1000 kg, this high grade stainless steel grappling hook can be fired quickly and accurately with a lightning fast auto-retract safety.
In-game information[3]

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Lara's grapple in GoL is similar to that in Legend and Underworld. She can attached it to metal rings in the levels and than can swing along walls or climb up or down. Additionally it can be attached to Totec. He can change his position, too, while holding the grapple; this way together they are able to reach places Lara alone can not.

Instead of a grapple Totec has a shield.

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

In Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris again Lara can use a grapple that attaches to metallic objects and other players. As in GoL before she can use it to climb walls or form passageways for other players.
